The Rootless Series: Shoshin (初心) Shakuhachi
Inspired by the Zen concept of Shoshin (初心)—“Beginner’s Mind”—and embracing the Japanese aesthetic of Sōboku (素朴), which enshrines elegant austerity, natural simplicity, and unadorned beauty, the Shoshin Shakuhachi emerges within our Rootless series. This instrument has been specifically conceived for those beginning their journey along the Mumon Ryū path, rooted in the philosophical premise that an open mind, free from pretension, is the irreplaceable foundation of all true learning.
Conceived as a responsible, functional, and accessible entry point, the Shoshin serves as an honest introductory tool. While it deliberately steps away from the complex lutherie details, mechanical sophistication, and professional finishes characteristic of our high-end master series, it guarantees rigorous acoustic performance: it is a properly tuned instrument, fully functional across two complete registers.
Organological and Acoustic Profile
Structure and Lightweight Build: Crafted from lightweight bamboo with thinner walls, chosen for its remarkable and responsive natural resonance.
Mouthpiece: Features a purely organic, traditional natural cut without any artificial inlays.
Internal Bore: Treated with a fine protective varnish film that safeguards the wood while preserving the raw, unpolished internal nature of the bamboo. This endows the instrument with a traditional timbre characterized by organic warmth and a slightly darker, earthier, and more grounded body, true to the genuine spirit of a jinashi flute.
Exterior Finish: Protected by a thin layer of transparent varnish that respects and reveals the unique personality of the original bamboo, keeping its native spots, veins, and colors fully visible.
An honest gateway to the path of bamboo, where material simplicity merges with the pursuit of essence.
