Frequently asked questions

What type of flute do I need to begin my journey with the Shakuhachi?

This isn’t a short answer!. For those beginning their journey, we recommend a standard 1.8 Shakuhachi (tuned to D). Acquiring a professional and reliable instrument is vital for your practice; it is fundamentally linked to a superior blowing and sound experience, the instrument’s intrinsic value, and your investment capacity.

While the internet offers countless options, our experience shows that a low-priced auction flute or mass-marketed online store alternative often fails to provide the essential qualities required for a proper start. Conversely, a high price tag does not always guarantee truly professional characteristics.

Our workshop was born from the necessity for instruments that are genuinely functional for music—calibrated, responsible across their full 3-octave range, and precise in both breath and tone. We are in a constant pursuit of improving sound technology, acoustics, and beauty to ensure every piece meets the highest standards of look, sound, and feel.

Any of our Shakuhachi series will serve as an excellent starting point. Each is meticulously engineered to offer precise acoustic response and tuning, facilitating your learning through a unique sonic experience. All our instruments feature our signature high-precision mouthpiece: the 'Singing Bat' utaguchi. If your goal is to invest in an instrument with superior aesthetics and a response tailored for both rigorous study and professional performance, we invite you to explore our specialized catalog.

What should I consider when purchasing a flute?

Sound, ergonomics, and aesthetics. You must look for applied technology and true functionality as a musical instrument. A professional flute must be reliable across all registers, offer precise tuning, and provide a seamless connection to its range and key. Above all, it requires the backing of a responsible brand that gives you the confidence of holding a professional-grade instrument in your hands.

Our flutes are performance-tested on video through complex auditions to demonstrate not only their acoustic precision but also the exquisite, hand-crafted beauty of the Zapata Hallmark.

What is the difference between Jinashi, Jiari, and Jimori Shakuhachi?

The primary distinction lies in the treatment of the flute’s internal bore:

  • Jinashi (Natural): The most organic and traditional style. The bamboo’s interior is preserved in its natural state, leaving the nodes visible. Its sound is earthy, raw, and rich in complex overtones—ideal for Suizen and meditative practice.
  • Jiari (Refined): The bore is lined with a paste of clay and lacquer (Ji) to create a perfectly tapered, smooth conical interior. This allows for precise tuning, increased volume, and rapid response, making it the standard for concert music and modern ensembles.
  • Jimori (Hybrid): A sophisticated construction technique where the bore is selectively intervened. Unlike the Jiari, which covers the entire interior, Jimori involves applying small amounts of material only at strategic points to stabilize the pitch.

In Essence: The Jinashi seeks the spiritual essence and raw texture of the bamboo. The Jimori assists the bamboo in reaching its finest acoustic potential without masking its internal nature. Meanwhile, the Jiari pursues acoustic perfection and technical power—the hallmark of detailed, high-end lutherie.

Can I request a personalized instrument from your lutherie workshop?

Yes. In our workshop, we perform high-level lutherie work where we can adjust the ergonomics for comfortable fingering, the tessitura, the weight balance, or specific aesthetic details upon request. Each personalized instrument is built respecting the musician's physiognomy and the technical demands that a reliable instrument must possess.

How can I join an online study program?

It is very simple! Just select the course, workshop, or cycle you wish to take in our Online Study Programs section, purchase the course, and complete the student registration form. Once your payment is processed, you will receive instructions regarding the documentation required for your enrollment, granting you access to our exclusive platform featuring personalized classrooms and premium study materials.

In which languages are the courses and study materials available?

Our community is global. Currently, we offer support and instructional materials in Spanish and English. Personalized tutoring and technical guidance are adapted to both languages to ensure that every student deeply understands the study content.

Is prior musical knowledge necessary to study with you?

No. Our courses (Shakuhachi, Handpan, or Sound Meditation) teach you from scratch using a friendly and effective methodology. The Shakuhachi, for example, uses a traditional Japanese notation that is visual and distinct from the Western staff. In our initial cycles, we teach you how to read this grammar from the ground up, as well as the necessary breathing techniques. Here, music is a path of self-discovery, not a prerequisite.

Can I take multiple study programs at the same time?

Yes, it is possible. With proper time management, you can advance through different paths and achieve a dual certification of mastery. Your student dashboard will group all your courses, providing independent access to each program's materials. Additionally, you may use your tutoring hours to support your progress in both programs.
