Zapata Shakuhachi Mumon Ryu® is a workshop specializing in the fine art of crafting deluxe shakuhachi high quality bamboo flutes, bearing a legitimately registered, authentic trademark. authentic registered trademark. Established in 2011 as a family venture that brings together in the love and passion of family spirit, the professional skills of each of its members.

By then, the mastermind behind it all, Ricardo Zapata, a recognized designer and artisan of Colombia's own Artesanías, a master certified by Japanese organizations in martial arts titled as shidoshi, University educator, designer, composer and professional musician, envisioned that blowing meditation (suizen) is a great complement to the martial art he teaches in his dojo (Est. 1998), and in making the experience of acquiring his own and students' instruments through online shopping, he experimented with these instruments from different sources and in the global shakuhachi market: non-compliance with quality standards, rustic instruments that did not support the performance of the player, extremely slow deliveries and without warranty, among others. Ricardo, not only wanted a high-quality instrument for his performances, but also one that could give the maximum potential of the interpreter and that did not limit by its structure, the virtuosity, the soul and feeling of the moment, nor the deviation of the meditator's attention.

All these issues to be solved, outside, and inside the family resonating the sound of the wind in the Colombian guadua, in the mind and in the soul, by the death of José Fernando Zapata, Ricardo's father, strengthened and directed with passion, honor and care the creation of his brand of high quality lutherie, trying to break the paradigms of the absolute truth of the Chinese-Japanese instrument. Working with capacity according to their expert trajectory in design and music, and the intuitive and optimal use of what the beautiful and prolific land of eternal spring that is Colombia delivers, for this case, the guadua and Colombian bamboo, strong, flexible gave its differential touch; Those guadua trees that when you travel on the road, accompany you with their majestic song.

The dreams of the brand do not stop. This brand, united by effort, perseverance and family affection, fights to improve every day. The first customers were born in Cartagena de Indias; with time, the capital, Bogota DC became interested and believed, thus extending to cities that tried with faith, Medellin and Cali. It was in the expansion to Latin America and Spain, where the feedback and consolidation of identity began, the warm sound of the first instruments, with natural cut mouthpieces, with a different aesthetic and guaranteed tuning. Argentina, Venezuela and Spain were the first to believe, then came Paraguay and Chile.

In the beginning, the flutes of simple construction (Jinashi) already guaranteed the quality of sound, professional tone and tessitura. In the course of more than a decade, the believers of Zapata's luthiery, expanded around the world, reaching the most remote places on the planet, whatever their purpose, musical, meditative or health, they gave themselves to the test, experienced the service and above all the instrument and its sound. With custom-made and exclusive designs, today, we have reached Mexico, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, France, Finland, Germany, England, Ireland, among others.

With the pioneering design of cutting-edge precision mouthpieces: Koumori Utaguchi (Singing Bat Mouthpiece) and Hicho Utaguchi (Flying Bird Mouthpiece), a new stage was initiated with a line of professional Jiari-type flutes with inner coating technology. We positioned not only the brand identity, but the differential aesthetics of the instruments, and transformed the intimacy and experience of the meditator and the musician, facilitating the blowing and creation of sound effortlessly, with our instruments that support the virtuosity on stage and the immersion of the meditator.

The New Standard of the Utaguchi

The relentless pursuit of a seamless synergy between performer, breath, and acoustic output has led Master Ricardo Zapata to a comprehensive re-engineering of the Koumori 2.0 blowing edge (utaguchi). The result is an optimized aerodynamic profile that refines laminar flow separation, yielding an exceptionally clinical and defined fundamental. This redesign ensures instantaneous transient response during articulation and fluid access to high-order harmonics in the daikan and extreme upper registers.

Mentonian Support Geometry: Unprecedented Flexibility

Complementing the bevel reform, we have recalibrated the angle of the chin rest (mentonian support), extending its contact surface. This geometric evolution grants the performer superior technical freedom, allowing for tonal inflections of up to three semitones (meri/kari techniques) with an organic transition. The result is an expansion of the microtonal and expressive range without sacrificing the stability of the sonic core.

The Geometry of Sound: Advanced Acoustics and the Jiari Secret

Our instruments are distinguished by the prestigious "Bat Cave" Jiari interior finish, a masterful technique exclusive to Mumon Ryu. Through meticulous craftsmanship of internal layers and textures, we achieve:

• Selective Harmonic Amplification: Creating a dense and complex sonic signature.
• Reverberant Resonance: An acoustic phenomenon that provides the instrument with a unique sense of spatiality, even in dry environments.

Finding bamboo in nature, extracting from it the best and unique is the beginning of this story. Between 6 and 10 years the story of each instrument is gestated, from extraction to delivery. The curing, drying and care of the bamboo is slowly gestated becoming adequate and ready with the craftsmanship that perfects and delivers a sound of defined identity, with coverage of 37 notes, ergonomics and design made according to the needs of the interpreter.

In addition to this, Ricardo Zapata, has been concerned to cover Internationally; our brand guarantees the safe arrival with the respect of time in delivery dates, giving the customer the ability to track your instrument in real time.
