Artist Biography
A retrospective of the artistic journey and professional legacy of master Ricardo Zapata.

As an independent Shakuhachi artist, Zapata is a recognized innovator in its lutherie. He pioneers cutting-edge, high-precision mouthpieces that dramatically enhance playability, sound, and aesthetic value.
His deep contribution to the Shakuhachi includes original compositions, significant musical ensembles, and the creation of a robust curricular system for aspiring masters of the instrument. His current focus is entirely dedicated to education through specialized online courses delivered via his virtual study community, supporting students around the globe. Zapata is actively changing the state of the art through design, music, and education.
As a Colombian music producer, he is renowned for his versatility in rock, instrumental, and world music. His work is distinguished by relaxing compositions that evoke dreamlike atmospheres and landscapes, with the Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) serving as the central and protagonist instrument.
As a singer-songwriter and producer, Ricardo Zapata has released 17 albums and singles (2012–2024). He was selected for the BOmm (Bogotá Music Market 2022) and leads the Colombian rock band "Los Zapata" (featured in the Top 10 of the XF Factor 2015 TV Program). His work has been included in relevant music compilations such as "Cartagena Alternativa" (2012) and the fifth Colombian-Chilean Rock compilation by the Sazoot / Rock Axis platform.
In the 90s, he shared the stage with international artists like Mano Negra (Manu Chao) and Vilma Palma e Vampiros in Cartagena.
Ricardo Zapata is a pioneer, scholar, performer, and luthier of the Shakuhachi in Colombia. His deep research and practice led him to create and found the MUMON RYU SUIZEN SHAKUHACHI, a certified study method and complete curriculum designed to achieve mastery of the instrument by uniting the art of music with meditation through breath (Suizen).
Avant-Garde Mouthpiece Design: He is the creator of the Koumori and Hicho references, high-precision inlaid designs that break away from historical Japanese schools. These innovations facilitate the blowing experience and allow the performer better command of the aerophone's tessitura across three complete registers, yielding a distinctive timbre and tone.
Custom-Made Instruments: Drawing on his role as a researcher and designer, he has developed lutherie projects for personalized and functional flutes, adapted for students with disabilities, such as spasticity.
As a performer, he has offered Shakuhachi recitals in important national venues, including the National Museum of Colombia (2016 and 2017) and the Santa Clara Museum (2016).
With over 25 years of experience in higher education, Ricardo Zapata holds a complete Japanese license for instruction in martial arts, reflecting his deep commitment to these disciplines.
He is certified as a Master (Shidoshi) in the arts of Ninpo Budo Taijutsu from the renowned Japanese organization Bujinkan, under Grandmaster Masaaki Hatsumi. Additionally, he holds the title of black belt in Karate-Do, certified by the International Karate Association (IKA) and awarded by Japanese masters Soke Takayuki Kubota and Kancho Takemasa Okuyama.
The master Zapata is not currently an active member of these organizations (IKA and Bujinkan).
Since 1998, he has directed the Shinken Dojo, where he teaches the arts of Budo and Suizen Shakuhachi (meditation through breath with the bamboo flute) to his students under his own certified method and curriculum.
His experience in martial arts and life philosophy is reflected in his work as an author. He was selected by the Colombian Book Chamber as a participating author in the Bogotá International Book Fair (FILBo 2025) with his book:
El camino del shakuhachi: Sopla tu mente controla tu tono. Zen a través de la flauta de bambú (English title: Blow your mind ride your tone. Zen through bamboo flute).
