Speaking of peace as a mere cessation of hostilities—so-called negative peace—is a conceptually insufficient exercise. Peace is not a static state of absence, but an active, dynamic, and multidimensional construction of the human condition. To comprehend its true density, it is necessary to undertake an analytical journey of ascending scale: starting from the depths of the individual subject and collective memory, passing through the structures of meaning and the social contract, and ultimately culminating in the material systems of exchange and integral human development.
Every construction of peace germinates within the inner self: in the mind of the individual and in the cultural matrix that gives meaning to their existence.
From the perspective of psychology, conflict and peace are played out within the emotional architecture of the psyche. This reality raises a fundamental question: If the capacity for human empathy evolved to protect one's own group, to what extent is it psychologically viable to build a global peace without first generating a category of "otherness" or a common enemy?. The wounds of trauma, cognitive dissonance, and the dehumanization of the "other" constitute intrapsychic barriers that perpetuate aggression. Inner peace—that which demands emotional regulation, the integration of pain, and the interruption of hostile projections—is not a natural presupposition, but a psychological conquest. Mental health and the capacity to process trauma and emotional wounds without transforming them into vengeance represent the first inescapable link of non-violence: resilience. We must first immerse ourselves within it.
However, the psyche does not operate in a vacuum. Anthropology demonstrates that mental processes are mediated by the universe of symbol, myth, and ritual. Contrary to the biologicist myth that war is indelibly inscribed in the human genome, ethnographic evidence reveals that armed violence is a cultural invention. This learned nature opens a crucial dilemma: Given that war is a cultural invention and not a biological necessity, to what extent does the institutionalization of peace demand the deactivation or transformation of the mythical narratives and rituals that have historically endowed peoples' identities with meaning?.
It is precisely at this threshold that Eastern philosophy makes a decisive contribution through the notion of non-violence (Ahimsa) and the pursuit of inner silence. In the contemplative traditions of the East, peace is not conceived as an external conquest over the environment, but as a state of "stillness in the heart." The act of calming the fluctuations of the mind dismantles the illusions of the ego that fuel the division between the "self" and the "other." If anthropology studies how cultures symbolize coexistence, Eastern philosophy proposes a discipline of self-knowledge where presence and conscious breath dissolve reactivity, laying the essential inner foundation for harmonious coexistence.
As we transition from internal and communal experience toward the organization of collectives, it becomes imperative to endow peace with an ethical foundation, institutional backing, and organized collective expressions.
Philosophy always intervenes to the benefit of this perspective, interrogating the nature of social order and justice. If anthropology and psychology explain how we are and how we feel, philosophy poses the critical question concerning the ought-to-be: Is "positive peace" a universal ethical-political demand or a Western conceptual imposition upon distinct ways of understanding justice and social order? From the Kantian notion of perpetual peace, it is understood that concord cannot depend on the contingent goodwill of individuals, but rather on a universal ethical framework and a social contract founded on reason and international law. Philosophy transcends mere peaceful survival to demand the presence of justice: there is no true peace without the full recognition of the subject's dignity and the unbridled exercise of their freedom.
This ethical imperative materializes or collapses within given social systems. There exist institutional relations, power dynamics, and resource distributions within society that create structural tensions within the system: Can a socioeconomic system based on indefinite growth and resource competition generate truly peaceful institutional structures, or does global peace inevitably require the reproduction of structural violence in the peripheries? Authors such as Johan Galtung teach that violence is not merely the physical act of aggression (direct violence), but resides within systemic inequalities (structural violence) and the ideologies that legitimize them (cultural violence).

Facing cultural violence and current sociopolitical borders, the collective initiative of World Shakuhachi Day (WSD2026) acts as a subtle yet direct sociological device for transnational cohesion. The fruit of dialogue between kansu Seian Genshin of the Myōan-ji temple in Japan and shakuhachi performer Kikuday (Denmark), WSD2026 constitutes an inclusive global platform that annually dissolves geographical, generational, and hierarchical barriers. Featuring a continuous 24-hour broadcast connecting 131 guests across 38 countries, the event institutionalizes a space of "peace in the world."
Within this map of convergence, Ricardo Zapata's contemporary proposal within his Mumon Ryu school stands out among others, as the very genesis of the concept of Mumon Ryu evokes the sociological and philosophical overcoming of cultural customs-houses: an "open door" where ancestral tradition is reconfigured into a contemporary expression through sonatas from his own repertoire—a committed education that integrates, includes, and values proximity, demonstrating that global peace does not demand cultural homogenization, but rather the free expression of interconnected identities engaging in dialogue within the same temporal flow.
The trajectory that began in the psyche and the inner self, structured through culture, ethics, global networks, and institutions, finds its crucible in reality under the prism of the acceptance and union of difference for human development.
Development conceived solely as the incessant accumulation of capital and the unlimited exploitation of resources not only generates inequality, but answers affirmatively to the aforementioned sociological danger, acting as a constant vector of conflict. Conversely, when economics is redefined in light of the preceding dimensions, it transforms into the science of the sustainability of life. Economist Amartya Sen articulated this paradigm shift by defining development not as the growth of Gross Domestic Product, but as the process of expanding the real freedoms and capabilities that people have reason to value.
Beyond the contrast and "confrontation" between Kant and Marx, this position acquires its greatest analytical power by confronting transcendental idealism and the ontology of praxis, avoiding the simplifications of partisan politics—for Peace is not about that, nor are human actions committed to it. Nevertheless, by bringing both perspectives into alignment—Kantian reason to harmonize relations among sovereign state units and Marx's diagnosis revealing that violence is not a behavioral defect to be corrected through laws, but rather the very form assumed by contradiction in the mode of production—we can understand and internalize that human conflicts do not stem from the expansion of the normative framework, but from dialectical resolution in concrete praxis.
Peace is neither an event nor a document signed at a negotiation table; it is a continuous ecosystem of the human condition. It begins as a psychic disposition and cultural learning within the subject—exemplified in the search for inner stillness and the philosophy of mindfulness—is formalized through ethical reflection, global collective networks such as WSD2026, and the community's sociopolitical institutions, and is sustained only when the global system guarantees the material conditions for each person to fully unfold their existence. Therefore, disconnecting any of these links destroys the entire project. Spiritual and artistic practice without sociological commitment proves impotent. Integral human development, projected from individual stillness to the collective clamor of nations resonating in unison, is a tangible purpose for peace.
