The Mumon Series represents our flagship collection of classic shakuhachi flutes, custom-tailored for the musician-meditator seeking the highest quality and exceptional contemporary luthier design. Each unit is meticulously handcrafted based on the customer's exact measurements, using a premium selection of thick-walled Colombian bamboo with a robust root base. This is an exclusive collector's instrument that excels in superior resonance while preserving a classic, elegant, and organic aesthetic with the authentic nuance of its natural coloration.

Artisanal Craftsmanship Features

• Custom ergonomic design: Finger holes positioned based on the exact measurements of each client's hands and fingers.

• Distinctive Koumori Inlay (Version 2.0): Precision mouthpiece featuring the Bat (Koumori) design, exclusive to the Zapata label. It guarantees optimal airflow, tonal clarity, and an unparalleled blowing experience. Its wide, closed yet deep circular design allows for precise note production across all three registers (ryo, kan, and daikan), as well as facilitating blowing effects, angle shifts, and directional changes to create rich harmonics along the blowing edge.

• Refined Jiari Interior Calibration ("Bat Cave"): Specialized interior treatment using our brand's proprietary blend that applies the micro-textured architectural Bat Cave technique (exclusive to luthier Zapata). Its specific interior diameter design breaks the traditional paradigm (Cavern vs. Tunnel): while common designs seek uniform tunnel-type geometries (direct and focused sound), the Bat Cave concept introduces a "cavern" dynamic that generates a warmer, more enveloping reverberation rich in harmonics with deep resonance. This meticulous process guarantees perfect intonation across three registers and seals the interior for a lifetime of durability.

Note: Both the bat mouthpiece (Koumori) and the Bat Cave interior technique are exclusive designs found only in flutes crafted by master Ricardo Zapata.

Bamboo Properties

• Origin and aging: Grown between 1000 and 1400 meters of altitude, strengthened by thermal variations for nearly 3 years. It is then cured and dried for 2 years before being handcrafted in a patient and delicate process performed personally by master Zapata.

• Architectural strength: This bamboo has been used for many years in the Colombian construction industry for large-scale architectural projects due to its exceptional physical-mechanical properties as a renewable alternative.

• Natural balance and aesthetics: Features a natural balance provided by the thickness of the bamboo and its robust root base, preserving the beauty of its relief to give each piece a unique identity.

• For bass flutes (A 2.3 and lower/longer): When placing your order, please indicate the position of your hands when holding the instrument; this information will be used to position the tone holes with millimeter precision. We recommend listening to the preview audio samples for each key beforehand. The longer the flute, the deeper the sound.
